Riley Smelkinson, BS, (he/him) graduated from Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Fall 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychological Sciences. During his undergraduate studies, he developed a strong interest in understanding and supporting marginalized communities, particularly individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community. His early academic experiences sparked a lasting commitment to advocacy and inclusive care. Riley is currently pursuing his doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) and entering his fourth year within NAU’s program.
He is dedicated to meeting clients where they are at and employing therapeutic modalities that promote self-understanding, growth, and autonomy. His goal is to create a safe and validating environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their experiences and achieving their fullest potential. Areas of clinical interest include trauma, grief, and working with those within the LGBTQIA+ community. Riley is dedicated to practicing in a way that is both gender-affirming and culturally competent.
Before joining SOGIA/EBT Center of Arizona, Riley gained extensive experience working in integrated systems, including community mental health centers, where he served as both a case manager and therapist. He has provided therapeutic services to adults dealing with a range of issues such as trauma, anxiety, and depression. Riley has also provided individual therapy in neuropsychological settings, utilizing evidence-based treatments like EMDR and CBT. In addition to therapy, Riley has interests in psychological assessment, including neuropsychological, psychoeducational, and ADHD evaluations. He brings substantial experience as a psychometrist, conducting neurological assessments for older adults and individuals with traumatic brain injuries.
In his free time, Riley enjoys photography–especially landscape, portrait, and astrophotography. He also loves playing tennis and pickleball.
